Companions on the Journey

From Father Rudi May 2019

Thank you to all who have made a commitment of financial and prayerful support to the Diocesan Catholic Appeal. We thank you for your generosity and your response to the call of Stewardship as a Holy Way of Life.

If you have not made your commitment yet, it is not too late. If you have not yet done so, we ask that you make your commitment today in order to provide the resources needed to continue vital diocesan ministries. We are counting on you to respond to this year’s theme, Companions on the Journey, which reminds us all that the journey to Heaven is one of accompaniment, encouragement, and walking alongside our brothers and sisters in Christ. It reminds us to share our gifts for the benefit of others who need your assistance. Please make your commitment today by filling out a pledge envelope located in the pew and dropping it in the collection basket, mailing your form, or dropping it by the office. Our parish goal is 100% participation and $386,030. You can also give your gift online at www.catholiclubbock.org/dca .

Last week someone left this anonymous note as their pledge form. The note reads as follows: “Unfortunately I no longer feel comfortable tithing here after finding out the CRS Rice Bowl was used in opposition to fund abortion and contraception for women in Africa.”

Let me clear up a few things. First, Catholic Relief Services, an organization of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, is a pro-life organization dedicated to preserving the sacredness and dignity of human life from conception to natural death. Their stated Catholic values are that “Catholic Relief Services is a manifestation of love for our brothers and sisters around the globe by the Catholic community of the United States. We protect, defend and advance human life around the world by directly meeting basic needs and advocating solution to injustice.”

As a part of the Universal Church, Catholic institutions are our partners of preference in our work. To reach all those who need our help, we also participate in humanitarian initiatives undertaken by a wide range of groups, such as governments, other faith communities and secular institutions. Although some positions and practices of these institutions are not always consistent with the full range of Catholic teaching, CRS’ association with them is always and only focused on activities that are fully consistent with Catholic teaching. Furthermore, CRS neither facilitates, endorses nor enables any violation of those teachings. CRS and its board of bishops and laypersons have a careful review system to ensure fidelity to Catholic moral teaching and to ensure that all funds under CRS’ direct control are used only for purposes complying with that teaching.

“If we, each, doing our own part,” the Holy Father teaches, “do good to others, if we meet them doing good, and we do so slowly, gently, little by little—we will make that culture of encounters that we need so much. We must meet one another doing good.” But our commitment to and belief in helping the poor, the hungry, the sick, the vulnerable, and the refugee in a way consistent with Catholic teaching—and modeling those values to others—remains unchanged.

Secondly, we must all be mindful of the 5 Precepts of the Catholic Church which include 1) Attendance at Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, 2) Confession of serious sins at least once a year, 3) Reception of Holy Communion at lest once a year during the Easter season, 4) Observance of the days of fast and abstinence, and 5) Providing for the needs of the Church.  As we consider precept 5, we are reminded that the faithful are obliged to help with the material needs of the Church, each according to his own ability. This includes the needs of our Diocese.

In 2 Corinthians 9:6—11, St. Paul tells us: “Consider this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.  Each must do as already determined, without sadness or compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work.”

I am continually blessed and humbled by the generous spirit that is demonstrated continually throughout the year by our parishioners. As we are blessed, we have been able to bless so many others in our community, surrounding communities and beyond our borders.  As God has given us everything we need, let us make a return to Him.
Fr. Rudolf Crasta

Deacon Michael’s Corner

As we were reminded during the reading from the letter of St. Paul to Titus at the Mass of Midnight on Christmas Eve, God has given us a gift in the person of Jesus Christ.  This gift purifies us as God’s people but also comes with an expectation: that we receive it with thanksgiving, allowing it to transform us into Christ’s image; learning to live a life “eager to do what is good.”

Father Rudi would like to extend his deepest gratitude to all of the wonderful parishioners who have indeed taken this gift to heart and used their time, talent and treasure in grateful thanksgiving during Advent and Christmas.

The gift of time:  Environment committee who so beautifully decorated the sanctuary and gathering space; those who decorated the Angel Trees, collected and distributed the gifts; the ushers who set up and then cleaned up chairs to handle the overflow crowd; all the lectors, servers, av operators, and ministers who served at Mass.

The gift of talent: the choir and all musicians; all who participated in and helped with the Children’s Pageant.

Finally, a special thank you to all who so willingly shared their treasure through gifts for the needy and in support of Holy Spirit. May you all be greatly blessed!

2020 Passion Play in Oberammergau In 1633, Southern Germany was in the grips of war, poverty, and the plague.  That year when the disease reached Oberammergau the villagers prayed for deliverance and vowed to perform a passion play about the last days of Jesus forever more.  Their prayers were answered and the village was saved from a continued outbreak of the plague. Nearly 400 years later the play continues.  It is performed once every decade. Witness Oberammergau Passion Play 2020 which will be performed daily May 16 through October 4, 2020. For more information please contact Debra at Envoye Travel 806-788-8907 ext.2004. Debra@envoye.com  Join me, Sigrid Carter, for a visit to my home Country Germany, so I can take you to Oberammergau to witness the 2020 Passion Play.  I have only a few GREAT seats left with an overnight in a 4 star hotel,  just a few steps away from the performance. The unique play is a world event, a must see for every Christian.   It takes place only every 10 years.  In 2010 we visited not only Oberammergau but also the Holy Land, Rome, Austria for the Sound of Music, Switzerland for the spectacular scenery, and France for the Shrine of St. John Vianney. I can tailor your trip just for you, or you can join our Danube cruise which includes the Passion Play.

Prayer Chalice for Vocations

Prayer Chalice for Vocations

Our Prayer Chalice for Vocations program at Holy Spirit needs more families to help us continue this very important ministry. If you would like to receive the chalice at the Sunday Mass you attend, please sign up in the Traveling Prayer Chalice book located on the Vocations table in the gathering space. Someone from the ministry committee will contact you prior to your chosen Sunday to receive the chalice.

On the Saturday or Sunday that you have chosen, a chalice will be presented to you at Mass. Please come to the foot of the altar, during the Prayer for Vocations, to receive the chalice and a blessing from Fr. Rudi or one of our deacons.

Inside the prayer chalice are the names of the priest, religious, the ordained and deacon candidates who serve Holy Spirit Parish. You will also receive a prayer packet with suggested ways to pray, as well as the names of the clergy serving in our diocese, so that you can also include them in your prayers.

From there you are free to choose your unique manner of praying for them. It may be by reciting the prayers in the chalice, or maybe you might want to ask God to bless each one as you speak their names, or you might choose to spend an hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament as you lift them up in prayer, or you might choose to pray a daily Rosary for an increase in vocations. When and how often you pray for them during the week could potentially bear fruit for yourself, your family, as well as our diocese. God does amazing things when we pray.

Please bring the prayer packet and chalice with you to Mass the following Saturday/Sunday. You may place it on the Eucharist Ministry table in the gathering space at least 15 minutes before Mass, so that the ceremonial minister can take it to the altar before Mass begins.

Thank you for considering committing to be a part of the Prayer Chalice ministry by receiving the chalice and committing to pray for vocations. Thank you.
