Prayer for My Parish

Prayer for My Parish

Almighty God, my parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly if I am. It will be holy if I am. Its pews will be filled if I help fill them. It will do great work if I work. It will be prayerful if I pray. It will make generous gift so many causes if I am a generous giver. It will bring other people into its worship if I invite and bring them. It will be a parish family of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity and mercy if I — who make it what it is — am filled with the same qualities. Therefore, with the help of God, I will dedicate myself to the task of being all the things that I want my parish to be. Bless my journey, Lord God,  Bless my journey, Lord God, that I might follow Jesus and build the Church for Your glory. Amen.

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time                                                               1031 in Hymnal

First Reading — Exodus 16:2-4,12-13

Second Reading — Ephesians 4:17,20-24

Gospel John 6:24-35

A Gospel Reflection :

All four Gospels relate the miracle of the Feeding of the Five Thousand, which comes immediately before the passage we hear in today’s Gospel, taken from St John. This text begins what is known as the ’Bread of Life Discourse’ (John 6. 22–59), which we start today and will continue reading over the next two Sundays. It is the morning after the night before, and the people go across the lake looking for Jesus – because, as he says, ‘they have eaten all the bread they can eat’. Through dialogue, Jesus helps them to see that it is the Father who has always provided for them – a theme reinforced in the First Reading and Psalm. Jesus also reveals something new to them: he himself is the sign they seek. Through his gift of living bread, he is offering them renewal of their minds and the ability to walk in the way of goodness and truth (Second Reading). This week, let’s give time for dialogue with the Lord that we, too, might respond to his desire to give himself totally to us, so that our deepest hunger and thirst may be satisfied. Mini Retreats Continue

It is encouraging to hear the inspirational speakers share their story during our mini-retreats after our weekend Masses this month. Thank you Eben Emerson, Charles Giles, Kathryn Loskill, Marla Cottenoir, Rob Hogan, Stacy Saultz, Deacon Daniel, and Kelly Shehan. Your stories seem to promote some insight into our own Christian journeys. May we continue to strive to open our hearts to hear God’s call to guide us in our daily lives. Please check out the weekly readings and other resources on our Mini-Retreat page here.

The Almighty Creator of the Universe desires a relationship with you so much that he would sacrifice his only Son to ensure that you could be united to  him, not only in this life, but forever. Spend a few minutes meditating on the mystery of God’s great love for you.
