Deacon Severo Alvarado

My journey began in Aguascalientes, Mexico.  I moved to the USA in 1963 along with my family and made my first home in the USA in San Simon, Arizona.  Then, moved to Hereford, Tulia, and Plainview, Texas and, finally, move back to Mexico in 1971.  In 1972, I moved back to the USA and lived in Plainview, Texas.  Moved to Lubbock in 1975 and have been here since—Lubbock is my adopted hometown and I have enjoyed living here.

During the course of the years I have worked in the farm, for a chemical company, for the Coca-Cola company, as a security guard, in construction, with an architectural  and engineering firm, and as a public school teacher and administrator. I attended school in Mexico for three years.  I graduated from Plainview High school in 1975.  I attended Texas Tech University and received my bachelor’s and master’s degree from this great institution—I bleed red and black, go Tech!!

My mother and one of my aunts were my evangelists as I was growing up; they were the ones who inspired and guided me in my walk of faith.  In 1983 I had a powerful spiritual conversion that catapulted me into service for God.  During the next twenty years God the Holy Spirit had a heyday with me and completely changed my life—for the better.  I became very involved in the parish and then, God called me to the deaconate.  So, in 2007 I was accepted into the deacon formation program and on September 8, 2012, I was ordained as a deacon.

As a deacon I have had the opportunity to serve at the altar, serve in prison and hospital ministry, and assist with the Sacraments of Baptism, Matrimony, and in funerals.  At Holy Spirit, I am involved with marriage preparation and serving at Mass celebrations.  I also serve at the diocesan center with the deacon formation class and in building inspections.

It is a great privilege and an honor to serve God in the many capacities He has allowed me to serve Him.  I am greatly blessed and thank God for my ministry.  I praise God for the many people—especially my wife Noelia—He places in my path who support, assist, guide, and encourage me to continue to give glory to God for all He has done for me and continue to serve Him well.
